The Elizabeth Stays are an 18th century foundation garment suitable for children up to about age 12. The basic cut of the stays, which facilitates proper posture without changing the child’s shape, is based on several extant examples.
Stays were worn by most girls from infancy through adulthood, as well as by some boys from infancy through early childhood. The Elizabeth Stays are not meant to be restrictive in any way. They should fit the child snugly without compression, close enough that they aren’t sliding about the body.
As with all 18th century stays, waist reduction is not the goal, nor should it be attempted.
At this time only two styles are available: Fully boned without straps or tabs, and half-boned with straps and tabs.
